KOI NO YOKAN

Koi No Yokan is a Japanese term for the sense upon meeting a person that the two of you are going to fall in love.

It is also the name of Deftones' new album that will be out this November. The band has already released three singles -- "Leathers" which was up for free download on their website, "Tempest," and the latest, "Rosemary."

I think Rosemary is the "Sextape" of this record. They have the same effect. Okay enough blabbing, just listen and fall in love please.

Lord bring them back to Manila please I am begging you.

Tiffany & Co.

So one of my best friends, Tiffany, got married over the weekend.

Valerie, the bridesmaid, Tiffany, Erwin, and Francis, Valerie's husband.
I love you Valerie!

Best friends since high school.

Trolling.

Ze lucky guy.

It was fun. It was crazy. It was Tiffany's wedding.

I should get married soon. Uhmm nope.

Yes, cute.

Was hanging out at the back eating cake. Yep, I was that enthusiastic to catch the bouquet.

My beautiful beautiful friends.

The bride getting teary-eyed and emotional. "Thank you Erwin kasi umattend ka." referring to her groom.

Happy friends.

I think I need to get married soon. Any takers? OF COURSE I'M KIDDING.

Unmarried people, better read this. :)

An open letter to Craig Anderson

Dear Craig Anderson,

I first saw your half-naked beauty on Tumblr in one of the posts of that account about surfers/surfing/the beach I follow. I am a sucker for messy hair and shy smiles, btw. Your abs, uhmm they're okay. Your name wasn't in the post so I patiently browsed more than three thousand notes just to see if one of them has your name. Luckily, I found a comment saying that your name is Ando. Not that helpful really, because I had to Google "Ando surfer" just to know your real name. And your birthday. And your height. I read somewhere that you're just 5"9? Perfect! Not that tall. You won't date someone taller than you, right? Au revoir supermodels! Not-so-tall girls celebrate!

I was quite disappointed when I learned that your Facebook is full and you don't  have Twitter. Try Twitter, you'll enjoy it, I swear. I saw your old Myspace and Ebay, too. Useless. Until I tried my luck with Instagram and there was your page in its hipster glory, ready to be stalked filtered photos and all. Too bad you don't post that many pictures of yourself. Just places you've been to and weird shit and cool stuff like that owl sitting on a bench which you described as your new friend. Oh and you like cats. You like cats! I love cats. Isn't this the universe telling us that we should be together?

Now let's talk about your surfing. Okay so I don't know shit about surfing but I love the beach so if ever we get married, you can surf while I get a sexy tan. Don't worry I'll be watching you the whole time. I'm kidding. I'm not the marrying type. I live in a country with lots of surf points, though. Try visiting the Philippines and see for yourself. I can even be your tour guide. For free!

If those above aren't creepy enough, I also hounded YouTube for videos of you. Surfing ones and interviews. This one's my favorite. You amazing you.

One last thing, you should ditch the grandpa clothes and try dressing up nicely. Or not. You'll still look good anyway. Nevermind. Dress the way you like. Or don't dress at all. That would be better. I wonder if you smell good. I hope you smell good.

There's a one in a bajillion chances that you will stumble upon this blog and read this so if ever that happens, please don't take this seriously. It's Sunday here in the Philippines and the weather is nice outside and it inspired me to write this. The weather made me do it.

Think about that offer about visiting the Philippines.

Love,

Joaz

PS. I am also obsessed with Brandon Boyd and Tom Hiddleston. Don't feel too special.

LIVE

The first ever concert I watched was a Rivermaya gig. I was in fourth grade, I think. All I can remember is that Bamboo was drinking lots of water during the whole thing and the crowd went insanely wild when they played Hinahanaphanap Kita.

When I was in high school, the closest thing to a real concert I have experienced were the parties thrown by our school. Riot of bad sound systems, awful programs, and local teen boys playing Slapshock, Cheese, and Greyhoundz covers. By the way, one of those teen boys is my brother.

College was a blur of underground band gigs. Attended a Sepultura concert, too.

When I started working, I got to watch three international bands: Arch Enemy, Deftones, and Incubus. The Killers, almost.

The music, the adrenaline, the screaming, the sweat, the mess. That special kind of high. Shouting "oh my god" and "fuck it, this is really happening!" Nothing beats watching a band play live. It's the only time you can punish your vocal chords and feel delighted and giddy the day after. You can't utter a word but you also can't stop grinning and humming like an idiot.

The Philippines is rarely visited by foreign musicians I actually like. So here I am bored out of my wits listing down the bands I want to see live.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE

They say rap-metal is dead but I don't care what crap other people say and I wouldn't miss an RATM concert even if I have to sell one eye for a ticket. This article got me excited.

STING (and THE POLICE, hopefully)

They might be old but their music is ageless. It might be impossible for them to reform and make records but at least one of them is still active. Speaking of which, Sting is coming to Manila on December 9 for his Back To Bass Tour! Tickets cost fucking insane though. More deets here.

M83

If you like indie-electronica then you have probably heard of M83. If you haven't, just watch the video above and understand why I want to see them live. Better if I have a few friends with me who are willing to dance it all out and go batshit cray.

PHOENIX

There's something about French bands. Especially this one. They all look like overall nice dudes and I can imagine the event to be extra chill and laid-back.

WOLFGANG

Yes, because I haven't seen them play live.

BLOC PARTY

Dear Bloc Party, Now that you're back together please visit the Philippines and let us experience live music from you. We're a tiny country, yes, but you have lots of fans here, I swear. You can have the concert in a small auditorium to make things intimate something like that Toe concert I didn't attend. Love, Joaz.

Part 1 of the very long list. Sorry for a month of not updating this baby.

Cafe Cristina: Homey. Cozy. Yummy.

I always hear my sister mention Cafe Cristina. It's where she and Neng usually hang out to study. Conveniently located along Marcos Highway, the place is homey and cozy with earth-colored interiors, adorable mismatched decors, good food, and friendly staff.

Took the corner seat where I can observe everyone.

Crispy Pork Chop
Breakfast ala Cubana
Pork Tocino
Toffee Fudge Cake
Chocolate Cookie
Neng's White Chocolate drink is yummy.
Cheeseburger and chips.
Big-ass tuna pie.
The ambiance is nice and the food is perfect. The only problem I have with this place is the music they play. I was expecting Au Revoir Simone or The National but they're playing Sitti.

Anyway, I have made up my mind that I'm gonna regularly visit this place. Too bad they don't have a Facebook fan page. Here's the map instead.

24 is the new 18

I turned 24 today and here's what I did.

Ate this amazingly delicious strawberry cheesecake. My sister's SWEET gift to me.
Was greeted by a pretty sunny weather when I woke up. Went out smiling.
Downed a big-ass burger.
Cute carrot cupcake for dessert from Blushing Cupcakes.
Watched Total Recall. Dozed off. Sorry, Colin Farell.
Ate. Again. Kani Salad and Maki.
Bought myself a vintage-looking dress.
And a cute pair of earrings.
Yes, I ate and shopped my day away. My little birthday adventure.

Fact: Summer Is Better

For a self-confessed sun worshiper, I think it's only proper to write a very long rant about my growing annoyance with the current weather, the rain, and all the hassles both bring. I am aware that it's stupid to do so because I live in a tropical country -- meaning it's either sunshine or precipitation and my only escape option is to sell a kidney, pack my bags, and move to Spain. Maybe I should just suck it up and enjoy this wet hell, third world style. God, it stinks hating on stuff you can't control.

When I was still working as a copywriter, I used to sit beside a glass window overlooking the southern part of the metro. After getting my work done, I usually count the airplanes that pass by or stare blankly at the sky. The other great thing about being seated in the said area is that I can observe the changes outside. Especially during summer. Longer days, shorter nights, bluer skies, brighter days. Having the chance to witness a season unfold right before my eyes was amazing. Just thinking about it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. Admit it, just like me, you know in your heart that summer will always, always be better. Here's why:

1. The clothes. The shorter, the better. Loose tops, cropped shorts, colorful slip-ons. Sunglasses! Yes, boots are cool, but bikinis are better.

2. The food. I agree, nothing beats a mean bowl of champorado, goto, and sopas --rainy day staples. But summer has halo-halo, mais con yelo, ice cream, frozen yogurt, and ice-cold Royal! Safe for your tongue.

3. The people. People are extra cheerful and happy during summer, thanks to the abundance of sunshine. I have read somewhere that light affects the mood of people. No wonder we are extra grumpy during the rainy season with all those gloomy clouds hanging around and blocking the sun.

4. The activities. Lounging in a hammock, sunbathing, running every morning, afternoon biking, visiting museums and parks. Roadtrips!

5. The music. Summer music has that special vibe that makes you want to dance like crazy all day and all night.

6. The freedom. Summer gives people that sense of freedom to roam and be adventurous. The rain is very restraining.

I therefore conclude that the rainy season is the universe's way of telling us that we have to recharge, reconnect and relax. A way of preparing us for the sea, the sun, the sand, come summertime. For the cold drinks, the bikinis and the wild parties. For the heat and the sweat. For the long drives and beach trips and bonfires. For another insane adventure.

Movie Couples

I was writing an entry about summer but I decided to drop it for this one. I am blaming the weather and Bloc Party for that decision. Listening to the accidental mash up of the rain pouring outside and the band's songs softly playing inside reminded me of my favorite movie scenes and scripts. I am not a hopeless romantic but I am a fan of good love stories.

Speaking of films and romance, let me introduce you to my favorite movie couples. (Sorry but the rain is bringing out the cheesy girl in me.)

Hmm I feel like watching movie.

One Little Bomb Music Video

Manila-based electronica duo Outcasts of the Universe launched their very first music video last night for the track One Little Bomb. Hear that sweet voice? That's Karen Vizcarra aka Dylan of Radio Republic. Yes, fanboys and fangirls, she sings!

Coolectronica: The 500

What the music scene needs right now are more electronica fans. Rock bands, we have enough of those/we've had enough of those. It's high time we chill it out a bit. Speaking of chilling it out, try listening to The 500. This is Ants Agarpao's (Outcasts of the Universe) solo project. Just like what's written in the artist's Bandcamp page, "...close your eyes, open your mind and let the sound slip into your stream through the viaducts of your dreams."

You can now press play.

Ants is 1/2 of the Manila-based electronica duo Outcasts of the Universe. Listen to their music here.

TV Characters I Like (Part 1)

I am a major sucker for everything Hollywood. From movies and TV shows to gossips and scandals (not the dirty ones.) It's not that I hate local TV but I have this thing for good stories, talented actors, and unpredictable plots, which I guess, are sort of lacking in the Pinoy scene. Don't get me wrong, the Philippines has lots of world-class artists, it's the TV networks I have problems with.

Okay enough whining and back to the real business. I love US shows and their stories but what I adore more are the characters and the actors/actresses who play them. Here's a list of my top boob tube personalities (fictional) and the reasons why I'm obsessed with them.

Howard Wolowitz  of The Big Bang Theory

Most fans like Sheldon and his quirky-close-to-mental attitude but I get the most kicks out of little old Howie. Played by Simon Helberg, Howard is a mechanical engineer, best friend to Raj, and the only one in the bunch without a doctorate degree. He has this signature outfit of skinny pants, over-sized belt buckles, turtle necks and Chucks. He also drives a Vespa which I find really cute. He throws pick-up lines like he's God's gift to women and thinks of himself as a ladies' man  which he actually isn't. He's cool because he's not.
Favorite Line: “If it’s creepy to use the Internet, military satellites and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so that I can drop in on them unexpectedly, then fine, I’m creepy."

Tyrion Lannister of Game of Thrones

Also known as the Imp, Tyrion is a small man with a really big attitude-- and I mean that in a positive way.The youngest son of Tywin, he is the sanest, most likable, and probably the only honorable person from House Lannister. Maybe Jaime, but no. Yes, he can be cunning at times, and protective of his dysfunctional family, but I can't help not to root for him. He is smart, probably the smartest character in all of the series, and he thankfully lacks the psychotic tendencies Cersei has. Tyrion is played by the amazing Peter Dinklage who won an Emmy for the role. I know Tyrion is a predictable pick but I won't apologize for choosing him over Jon Snow, Daenerys, or even Ned. Ned is dead for fuck's sake.
Favorite Line: "Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.

Epic Tyrion slap. I can watch this all day.

Cesare Borgia of The Borgias

Played by the gorgeous Francois Arnaud, Cesare is a medieval bad boy in chasuble. The son of Rodrigo Borgia aka Pope Alexander VI, he is a screaming epitome of sin. A cardinal by profession, Cesare engages in probably the most ungodly activities one can ever think of. Yes, including that almost incestuous relationship with Lucrezia. The most admirable thing about him is his intelligence and his love and loyalty to his family, especially to his father. Oh, plus those eyes.

Peter Bishop of Fringe

Two words: Joshua Jackson. Nah, I'm kidding. No, I'm not. Peter Bishop is one of the main protagonists of the sci-fi series Fringe. According to Wikipedia, he's a deuteragonist but for me, he'll always fight for the real world's side. He is the son of Walter Bishop (John Noble) and the love interest of Anna Torv aka Olivia Dunham. Peter's story is verrry interesting. Why? He's from a parallel universe, that's why. He has this cool, calm, and collected attitude and is very intelligent. It always makes my day whenever the episodes show him wearing that signature black jacket. Ugh. Diane Kruger, you're one lucky girl.

This ends the first part of this entry. For the second half, I will list down the female counterparts of these guys. I also plan to shortlist my favorite movie characters. That would be fun.
